The NY Marriages Process

HOW YOUR CEREMONY COMES TO LIFE

The NY Marriages Process

Couples often ask how we create ceremonies that feel so personal after knowing them for only a short time. The answer is not a template. It is not only a questionnaire. It begins with a conversation—and with listening closely enough to understand not just what you say, but how you say it.

01

The First Conversation Isn't an Interview

There is an abundance of information you can glean from an initial conversation. Tens of thousands of first conversations later, we still place tremendous importance not only on the information we receive, but also on the tone in which our couples' answers are conveyed.

Sometimes it is not the answer itself that tells us the most. It is the smile that follows, the pause before answering, or the excitement in someone's voice while telling a story. Those moments often reveal far more than a questionnaire ever could.

Most officiants can ask where you met. We want to know what made you realize this relationship was different. That is how we begin learning whether your ceremony should feel humorous, grounded, reflective, conversational—or some natural combination of all four.

Turning Conversations Into Ceremony

Listening for What Matters

The conversations allow NY Marriages to personalize the ceremony's wording while also reflecting the couple's personalities and natural tendencies. In other words, it is simply about getting to know two people—and, very often, their self-admittedly crazy families.

Writing in Your Voice

A great ceremony does not sound like it was written by a professional writer. It sounds like it was written by someone who genuinely understands the couple. Beautiful writing has its place, but a wedding ceremony is not a literary exercise. It should sound unmistakably like the two of you.

The right words matter. The way they are delivered matters just as much.
02

Finding the Right Voice

Writing a ceremony is only half the job. Delivering it is something entirely different.

One of the biggest misconceptions about wedding ceremonies is that an officiant should sound like they are giving a speech. We believe the opposite is true. There are moments that call for eloquence and moments that call for simple, genuine conversation.

A ceremony should sound like two people getting married—not like someone reading from a script. Knowing when to shift between those styles comes only from experience. Sometimes the right moment calls for thoughtful reflection. Other times it calls for a smile, a laugh, or one simple sentence spoken exactly the way people naturally speak.

Behind the Scenes on Your Wedding Day

License and Timing

Before the ceremony begins, I check the marriage license, review the timing, confirm where everyone will stand, and make sure the microphone is working properly with the DJ.

Music and Venue Coordination

I coordinate the final words with the DJ or musicians so the recessional music does not begin too early. I also tell venue staff how long the ceremony will last so the kitchen can time service properly.

Photography and Calm

Photographers are given the freedom to do their jobs. I stay aware of their sightlines, move out of the way for the kiss, and help couples relax by reminding them they may face each other, smile, speak, and even share a quiet joke.

03

The Questionnaire Adds Another Layer

The questionnaire is not the ceremony itself. It is another conversation starter.

It gives couples time to reflect on details they may not have thought to mention during the first conversation, and it gives us another opportunity to understand the relationship from both perspectives. The conversations, the questionnaire, and nearly two decades of experience eventually become one cohesive ceremony.

Why Couples Say It Felt Like We'd Known Each Other Forever

Across nearly 200 WeddingWire reviews, the same themes appear again and again. Couples say it felt as though we had known each other for years. Guests ask whether we are family friends. That is one of the greatest compliments we can receive because it means the ceremony did not feel like it belonged to an officiant. It felt like it belonged to the couple.

More Than 13,000 Ceremonies Later

After more than 13,000 ceremonies, one thing has never changed: every couple has a story worth telling. Our job is not to write our ceremony. It is to help tell yours.
